Conversation Questions in English – Flash Cards for English Speaking Practice

This resource contains 50 conversation starters on individual cards.

NOTE: These questions are intended for ADULT ESL learners though most of the questions are also suitable for teenagers. Having said this, you can remove or not use some of the cards that are not age appropriate. I recommend downloading the preview so you can see the list of 50 questions that appear on these cards.

There are MANY ways these conversation starters can be used in the ESOL / ELL classroom.
Ideally you would laminate these conversations cards so they can be used over and over again.

One way to use these conversation cards is by giving each student a card.
They should then get up from their desks and find a partner. Students take turns asking and answering the questions on the cards with their partner. Once finished, they should exchange cards and find another partner to repeat the same activity.
This is a great tool for working on basic conversation skills.

There are 50 questions so you could use one or two a week either as a speaking activity or as writing prompts.
These cards can also be used as warm-ups at the beginning of a class.

Halloween Monsters

(ESL Information Gap Activity)

This is a speaking activity in English where students work in pairs.
The main objective of this activity is for students to practice asking and answering simple present tense questions in English in order to complete all of the missing information in their chart.

The chart contains six Halloween monsters (Vampire, Zombie, Mummy, Witch, Skeleton, Werewolf) and has information about their age, where they live, their food, their pet, where they sleep, and the clothes they wear. Of course some of the information is missing which the other student has (and vice versa). This is where students need to ask their partner questions in English in order to complete the chart.

This resource is great to use before Halloween.

CONTENT: This teacher resource contains 5 Pages:

  • Teacher Instructions – (1 page)
  • Monster Chart for Student A – (1 page)
  • Monster Chart for Student B – (1 page)
  • Monster Chart – Teacher Reference Chart – (1 page)
  • Monster Chart A and B on one page (smaller version) – (1 page)

We also have a version of this resource in Spanish.
