The Correct Word – English Error Analysis Game

This is an ESOL error analysis activity.
The main worksheet contains 30 sentences that have a highlighted word.
The students need to say whether the highlighted word is correct or incorrect in that sentence AND if it is not correct say why.

This error analysis covers some common mistakes made by English learners (e.g Travel vs. Trip, spelling, vocabulary, tenses, uncountable nouns, etc.)
You may want to watch how I used this activity with a LIVE audience on YouTube in order to know which sentences appear in this error analysis (LIVE coming soon).

✅ PRINTABLE (PDF) VERSION
The Printable PDF Version of this resource includes:

There are 4 versions of this printable resource.

  • There is a version WITH a highlighted word – making it easier to identify if the sentence is correct or not.
(e.g. Next year I plan to go on a travel to Egypt.)
  • There is a version WITHOUT a highlighted word – the student will have to identify if the sentence is correct or not.
(e.g. Next year I plan to go on a travel to Egypt.)
  • We also have versions of the above where the students ARE or ARE NOT playing for points.

At the top of each worksheet it will have the following instructions (depending on the version):

Worksheet Version 1 – WITH Highlighted Word & Points
Is the highlighted word in each sentence correct? You must say whether the word is correct or incorrect and then use between 10 and 100 points with your answer. If your answer is right, you win that amount of points.
For a wrong answer, you lose that amount of points. Add or subtract the points won or lost immediately.
Whoever has the most points at the end, wins. Everyone starts with 500 points.

Worksheet Version 2 – WITHOUT Highlighted Word & Points
Is each sentence correct? You must say whether the sentence is correct or incorrect and then use
between 10 and 100 points with your answer. If your answer is right, you win that amount of points.
For a wrong answer, you lose that amount of points. Add or subtract the points won or lost
immediately. Whoever has the most points at the end, wins. Everyone starts with 500 points.

Worksheet Version 3 – WITH Highlighted Word & NO Points
Is the highlighted word in each sentence correct?
In the space to the left of each sentence, write your answer. (C for Correct or I for Incorrect)
If the highlighted word is NOT correct, you should write the correct form of that word at the end of the sentence.

Worksheet Version 4 – WITHOUT Highlighted Word & NO Points
Is each sentence correct?
In the space to the left of each sentence, write your answer. (C for Correct or I for Incorrect)
If the sentence is NOT correct, you should write the correct form of the word that needs to be corrected at the end of the sentence.

English Error Analysis Flash Cards & Worksheets – Set 1

This activity contains 50 sentences that all have an error.
Students need to write each sentence correctly.

There are two versions of this error analysis activity:

Error Analysis Flash Cards

There are 50 individual flash cards, one for each error.
Each flash card says:

This sentence is not correct.
(Sentence with an error appears here)

Write the sentence correctly.
(There is a line/space where the answer can be written)

See the preview image for the exact format of the flash cards.

One option is to have students write their answers in a workbook/exercise book. Another alternative is to have the student(s) give the answer orally.
There is a number in the top left corner of each flash card for convenience.

Error Analysis Worksheets

Instead of individual flash cards, the sentences are listed on two worksheets with numbers next to them.
At the top of each worksheet it says:

Each sentence is NOT incorrect.
Write the sentence correctly.
Sometimes there is more than one possible answer.

See the preview image for the exact format of the worksheet.

The 50 sentences are divided into two worksheets containing 25 sentences each. Both are numbered 1-25 so that they can be used in any order or the teacher can choose just one of them to use if they like. There is another version that has the last 25 errors (errors 26 to 50 according to the flash cards) listed with their corresponding numbers in case you want them to coincide with the flash card numbering.

Answers for Teachers / Parents

There are versions of both activities (both flash cards and worksheets) that have the correct answers which students can use to check their own work or as a reference guide for teachers / parents.

Level of this activity

This error analysis is aimed at students at a lower intermediate level. Some of the errors may be for lower levels though they are good as a revision activity. (Also helps to build their confidence so they can see how much they have advanced.)

Some of the grammar errors include: prepositions, comparatives, subject + verb agreement, tenses, apostrophe S, word order.

Some of the vocabulary errors include: do vs. make, travel vs. trip, incorrect spelling.

To Be – Present Simple Tense – Error analysis worksheets and board game

This activity contains 48 sentences / questions using TO BE in the present simple tense. Each sentence and question is incorrect.
Students need to write the same sentence (or question) correctly.

Note: Sometimes there may be more than one way to correct each sentence or question:
e.g. “Is the chairs comfortable?” could have two possible correct answers:

  1. Is the chair comfortable? OR 2. Are the chairs comfortable?

There are versions of this activity that have the correct answers that the students can use to check their own work.

Remind them that if they have an answer that may be different to one that appears on the answer sheet, that there can sometimes be more than one way to correct the sentence so those responses can be checked with a teacher or fellow student.

PRINTABLE (PDF) VERSION
There are two versions of this error analysis activity:

Error Analysis Board Game
This is a simple type of board game where all 48 sentences appear in individual rectangles on the page. At the top left there is a slightly darker rectangle that says START. The final rectangle (also slightly darker) at the bottom of the page says FINISH. GREAT WORK! Arrows show the direction the students need to take from one rectangle to the next.

There are different ways this game can be played. A die (dice) can be used to see how much a student advances around the board. They need to correct the sentence/question that they land on.

Option 1: The students get a point for each sentence/questions they change correctly.
Option 2: Should they change the sentence correctly, they can roll the die (dice) again to continue. If they don’t answer correctly, they return to the START rectangle. I found this fun with adult students.

This game can be played in pairs, as a small group, or individually. When there is more than one person playing, they can take turns after making each correction.

Error Analysis Worksheets
Instead of a board game layout, the sentences (and questions) are listed with numbers next to them.
At the top of each worksheet it says:
– Each sentence and question is incorrect.
– Write the same sentence (or question) correctly.
– Sometimes there is more than one possible answer.

The 48 sentences/questions are divided into two worksheets containing 24 sentences each. Both are numbered 1-24 so that they can be used in any order or the teacher can choose just one of them to use if they like.

The post English Parts of the Body Charts first appeared on Woodward English.]]>
Our popular Parts of the Body in English chart is now available for classroom use.

We have created three different versions of the chart so teachers can decide which would be more appropriate or useful for their own class.

1. A version where the English word appears next to its corresponding part of the body.

2. Another version has a line (instead of the word) where students can write the name of the body part in English next to its corresponding part.

3. The final version has numbers instead of the name of the body part. Students can then write their answers in their exercise books or on the answer sheet that is also included in this resource.

Each of these versions has another three versions. One of both the frontal and side view together, another with only the frontal view, and the last one only the side view. See the preview for a better idea of the different types of charts available.

There is also a worksheet with a mini chart at the top (both front and side view) and a numbered area at the bottom of that worksheet where students can write their answers. An answer sheet has been included should you want students to be able to check their own work.

The following vocabulary appears on the main chart (31 words): ankle, arm, calf, cheek, chest, chin, ear, elbow, eye, eyebrow, finger, foot, forearm, forehead, hand, head, heel, hip, knee, leg, lips, mouth, neck, nose, palm, shin, shoulder, thigh, thumb, toe, wrist.

We highly recommend seeing our video about Parts of the Body in English which is appropriate for classroom use and a great lead up to the worksheet.

We also have a version of these charts in Spanish: Spanish Parts of the Body Charts

Pronunciation of ED – Sounds of ED – ESL Listening Activity

The objective of this activity is to help students distinguish the sounds of ED at the end of words in English.

The teacher (guide) has 3 lists of words ending in -ED (they are all regular past tense verbs). Each list contains 18 words. The teacher reads out each word from a list and students need to write the word they hear in the correct column according to the final ED sound each word has.
There are three columns for students to choose from: /t/ – /d/ – /id/
For example, when the teacher says “wanted”, students need to write that word in the “/id/” column.
Not only are students becoming more aware of the three sounds of -ED, but this activity can also double as a spelling exercise.
As mentioned before, there are three lists. Each list could be used on different days. Note that List 3 has slightly more challenging words.

Teacher answer keys have been created which can also be used by students to check their own work. There is a separate page for each list of 18 words.

This resource is ideal for ESL/ELL students to help them sound more like a native speaker when it comes to saying words that end in ED (accent reduction).

I have created a pronunciation video on YouTube about this topic: ED pronunciation in English – How to pronounce ED endings (Suitable for the classroom).

Pronunciation of ED in English – Sounds of ED – Cut and Paste Activity

The objective of this activity is to learn the sounds of ED at the end of words in English.

There is a list of words ending in -ED. Students need to cut out each word and then paste/glue them in the correct column according to the sound of the final ED each word has.

One activity has 15 words with the cut and paste activity happening on the same page.
The second activity has 30 words on one page which need to by cut and pasted into their correct columns on a separate page. The ED words in both activities are different.

Also, there are two versions of both activities:
One where the three columns are headed with T, D, and ID;
The second version also with three columns though headed with T, D, and ED.
Notice how the only difference is ID or ED being written differently in the final column. This is because some teachers use ED at lower levels instead of the normal ID.

A teacher answer key has been created which can also be used by students to check their own work. This makes it ideal as a literary center activity.

This resource is ideal for ESL/ELL students to help them sound more like a native speaker when it comes to saying words that end in ED (accent reduction).
