How would you feel if ...?

The post English Teacher Resources first appeared on Woodward English.]]>
This ESOL resource contains 50 conversation questions about feelings and emotions.
All the questions begin with: How would you feel if …?
There are fifty different situations where students have to say how they would feel in that situation.

NOTE: These questions are intended for ADULT ESOL learners (at least at an intermediate level) though most of the questions are suitable for teenagers. You can always remove or not use some of the cards that are not age appropriate.

There are MANY ways these conversation questions can be used in the ESOL classroom. Ideally you would laminate these question cards so they can be used over and over again.
One way to use these conversation questions is by giving each student a card.
They should then get up from their desks and find a partner. Students take turns asking and answering the questions on the cards with their partner. Once finished, they should exchange cards and find another partner to repeat the same activity.
This is a great tool for working on English conversation skills.
There are 50 questions so you could use one or two a week either as a speaking activity or as writing prompts.
These cards can also be used as warm-ups at the beginning of a class.

Example Conversation Questions are:
➡️ How would you feel if you lost your wallet with all your money and important cards?
➡️ How would you feel if you were asked to perform on stage in front of a large audience?
➡️ How would you feel if you met your favorite celebrity in person?
➡️ How would you feel if someone crashed into your parked car and didn’t leave a note?
➡️ How would you feel if your boss won the lottery?
➡️ How would you feel if your long-lost pet suddenly came back home?
➡️ How would you feel if your partner forgot your anniversary?
➡️ How would you feel if you were stuck in an elevator with a group of strangers for hours?

PRINTABLE (PDF) VERSION

We have included a list of all questions that appear on the cards on two pages (25 questions per page) that the teacher can use for reference.
There are TWO versions of the Question cards:

 1. Full-color version – the speech bubble is filled with a red to orange gradient
 2. Printer-friendly version – the speech bubble has black text on a white background

(See can see the design of both versions in the preview)
There are 6 question cards per page. They are surrounded by dotted cutting lines.

The Printable PDF Version of this resource includes:

English Error Analysis Flash Cards & Worksheets – Set 1

This activity contains 50 sentences that all have an error.
Students need to write each sentence correctly.

There are two versions of this error analysis activity:

Error Analysis Flash Cards

There are 50 individual flash cards, one for each error.
Each flash card says:

This sentence is not correct.
(Sentence with an error appears here)

Write the sentence correctly.
(There is a line/space where the answer can be written)

See the preview image for the exact format of the flash cards.

One option is to have students write their answers in a workbook/exercise book. Another alternative is to have the student(s) give the answer orally.
There is a number in the top left corner of each flash card for convenience.

Error Analysis Worksheets

Instead of individual flash cards, the sentences are listed on two worksheets with numbers next to them.
At the top of each worksheet it says:

Each sentence is NOT incorrect.
Write the sentence correctly.
Sometimes there is more than one possible answer.

See the preview image for the exact format of the worksheet.

The 50 sentences are divided into two worksheets containing 25 sentences each. Both are numbered 1-25 so that they can be used in any order or the teacher can choose just one of them to use if they like. There is another version that has the last 25 errors (errors 26 to 50 according to the flash cards) listed with their corresponding numbers in case you want them to coincide with the flash card numbering.

Answers for Teachers / Parents

There are versions of both activities (both flash cards and worksheets) that have the correct answers which students can use to check their own work or as a reference guide for teachers / parents.

Level of this activity

This error analysis is aimed at students at a lower intermediate level. Some of the errors may be for lower levels though they are good as a revision activity. (Also helps to build their confidence so they can see how much they have advanced.)

Reading Activities in English about the Four Seasons

All texts are short with 4 or 5 sentences written in the Present Tense. The rest of the page has simple comprehension questions to check understanding.

PRINTABLE (PDF) VERSION

The five reading passages are: The seasons of the year, Spring, Summer, Fall / Autumn and Winter.

These worksheets should only take 10-15 minutes each so are a great activity to warm up a class or to end the day. You could do a worksheet every day (lasting a school week) or leave them as homework.
These reading passages would be great in an emergency as a quick filler and you may also find them useful to hand out to fast finishers (so they don’t disrupt others).

Bonus Listening Activity
We have included a handout with these 5 stories on one page (without exercises). This can be used where the teacher gives the comprehension questions orally, or can be used in conjunction with the audio on our YouTube channel (or via EASEL) so they can read as they listen (without the distraction of other activities on the page). The EASEL online version has the listening as a part of the digital resource. Students just click the listening button to start the audio on their devices.

There is another sheet with the 5 stories on one page, but this time with certain words missing and replaced by a blank line where students can fill with the word they hear on the listening.

All reading texts, questions and instructions are 100% in English.

e.g. “Is the chairs comfortable?” could have two possible correct answers:

 1. Is the chair comfortable? OR 2. Are the chairs comfortable?

There are versions of this activity that have the correct answers that the students can use to check their own work.

Remind them that if they have an answer that may be different to one that appears on the answer sheet, that there can sometimes be more than one way to correct the sentence so those responses can be checked with a teacher or fellow student.

PRINTABLE (PDF) VERSION
There are two versions of this error analysis activity:

Error Analysis Board Game
This is a simple type of board game where all 48 sentences appear in individual rectangles on the page. At the top left there is a slightly darker rectangle that says START. The final rectangle (also slightly darker) at the bottom of the page says FINISH. GREAT WORK! Arrows show the direction the students need to take from one rectangle to the next.

There are different ways this game can be played. A die (dice) can be used to see how much a student advances around the board. They need to correct the sentence/question that they land on.

Option 1: The students get a point for each sentence/questions they change correctly.
Option 2: Should they change the sentence correctly, they can roll the die (dice) again to continue. If they don’t answer correctly, they return to the START rectangle. I found this fun with adult students.

This game can be played in pairs, as a small group, or individually. When there is more than one person playing, they can take turns after making each correction.

Error Analysis Worksheets
Instead of a board game layout, the sentences (and questions) are listed with numbers next to them.
At the top of each worksheet it says:
– Each sentence and question is incorrect.
– Write the same sentence (or question) correctly.
– Sometimes there is more than one possible answer.

The 48 sentences/questions are divided into two worksheets containing 24 sentences each. Both are numbered 1-24 so that they can be used in any order or the teacher can choose just one of them to use if they like.

Final S Pronunciation – ESOL Charts https://www.woodwardenglish.com/resources/final-s-pronunciation-esol-charts/ Sun, 14 Mar 2021 22:41:28 +0000 https://www.woodwardenglish.com/?post_type=product&p=3714 ESOL / ELL Reference Charts about the pronunciation of the Final S at the end of words in English - English Teacher Resource

The post English Teacher Resources first appeared on Woodward English.]]>
Pronunciation of -S at the end of words – ESOL / ELL Charts

Why does the ending of sleeps sound like a S, the end of dreams sound like a Z, and the end of races is a whole new syllable with a sound like IZ?
There are three ways of pronouncing the final S at the end of words in English:
/s/, /z/, or /iz/.

Our charts explains the general rules for the pronunciation of words ending in –S. These words are normally regular plural nouns or third person verbs in the simple present tense.

This resource is ideal for teenage or adult ESL/ELL students to help them sound more like a native speaker. It is a great reference guide to help accent modification.

Summary Chart
The first chart is a summary of how to pronounce the final -S showing /iz/, /s/, or /z/ endings with examples.

Summary Chart – Smaller 2 per page version
Then we have a smaller version of this same chart with two of them on one page (surrounded by cutting lines).

/iz/ Pronunciation Chart
This chart contains examples of words that end with a sibilant sound giving us the /iz/ pronunciation (and extra syllable) when adding an S to the end. There is a box for each letter (C, S, X, Z, SS, CH, SH, GE) and six examples of that letter (e.g. for C are the words advances, bounces, dances, forces, introduces, and races).

/s/ Pronunciation Chart
This chart contains examples of words that end with the voiceless /s/ pronunciation. There is a box for each letter (P, K, T and F) with six examples for each letter. GH and PH are in the same box with two examples for each. There are three blank boxes at the bottom of the page which can be used for additional notes or examples if desired.

/z/ Pronunciation Chart
This chart contains examples of words that end with the voiced /z/ pronunciation. There is a box for each letter (B, D, G, L, M, N, R and V) with six examples for each letter.

Pronunciation Mix Chart
The final chart contains a variety rules:

VOWEL SOUND: There are 12 examples of verbs that end in a vowel sound that have the voiced /z/ pronunciation at the end (e.g. agrees, plays, etc.).

NG: We look at how the letter S after NG sounds like a Z thus having a voiced /z/ ending. (6 examples of words ending in NGS)

TH: There are two ways of pronouncing TH (ð and θ). Words that end in the voiced dental fricative TH /ð/ have a voiced pronunciation of the final S ending. We give six examples of words ending in this way (e.g. bathes, breathes, clothes…)
Words that end in the voiceless dental fricative /θ/ have a voiceless pronunciation of the final S ending. We give six examples of words ending in this way (e.g. breaths, months, strengths…)

There are two versions of these charts, one that is designed in one color (green) and the other is with color-coding of /iz/ in green, /s/ in orange, and /z/ in blue. Check the preview to see this difference.

I have also created a pronunciation video on YouTube about this topic: Final S pronunciation in English – How to pronounce words ending in S (Suitable for the classroom).

This is a great tool for working on basic conversation skills.

There are 50 questions so you could use one or two a week either as a speaking activity or as writing prompts.
These cards can also be used as warm-ups at the beginning of a class.

Woodward English Quiz – ESOL Task Cards

The objective of these tasks cards is for English learners (ESOL) at an intermediate level to practice and improve their English.

Each task card is a multiple-choice quiz where a sentence or question has a word or some words missing from it. Students need to choose one of four options available to correctly complete the blank space and write their answer on an answer sheet.

There are 100 different quizzes which cover topics such as: do vs. make, prepositions, countable and uncountable nouns, some/any, much/many, tenses (present, past, perfect), homophones, common mistakes (your vs. you’re), adjective word order, comparatives/superlatives, articles, for vs. since, collocations, phrasal verbs, general vocabulary, and more.

A teacher answer key has been created which can also be used by students to check their own work. This makes it ideal as a literary center activity.

You can see all of the questions in this set by looking at each individual quiz on our social media accounts (there is an entire board on pinterest called English Quiz). This set contains Woodward English Quizzes numbered 1 to 100. The difference with the quizzes in THIS resource is that the answers do NOT appear in the bottom right corner and our website addresses don’t appear at the bottom (as they do on social media). Also, this resource contains blank answer sheets for students and an answer key for teachers/students.

I have made it easier for teachers to print with 6 quizzes per page (surrounded by dotted lines for cutting). Another alternative is to project one quiz a day on the board and ask students WHY a certain answer is correct. Doing so will give you 20 weeks worth of activity.

How much? How many – ESL / ESOL Grammar Charts

ESL / ESOL Grammar Charts that show the difference between HOW MUCH and HOW MANY in English.

Main Summary Chart

The main summary chart explains how HOW MUCH is used with uncountable nouns and HOW MANY is used with plural countable nouns.

It also explains how HOW MUCH can also be used to mean I want to know the price (with To Be + a singular or plural noun).

The final part of the summary chart explains how the noun can be omitted in the question when it is obvious what we’re talking about.
e.g. A: I need some sugar. B: How much do you need?

There are two versions of this main summary chart:

 • One larger version on one page (can be used on a wall or in a student’s book)
 • Two smaller versions on one page with cutting lines around them.

I have included this summary chart divided into two parts on separate pages. The first part of the main summary chart on one page and the omitted noun explanation on another page.

BONUS: There is an exercise page with 8 simple questions where students need to fill the blank with MUCH or MANY. There is an answer sheet for teachers or for students to check their own answers.

These charts are ideal for putting on the classroom wall.

They should then get up from their desks and find a partner. Students take turns asking and answering the questions on the cards with their partner. Once finished, they should exchange cards and find another partner to repeat the same activity.
This is a great tool for working on basic conversation skills.

These cards can also be used as writing prompts or even as warm-ups at the beginning of a class.
