Prepositions of Time – AT, ON and IN – ESL/ELL Task Cards

32 multiple choice task cards to reinforce the correct use of the prepositions of time AT, ON and IN in English.

There are two version of these task cards. The first version is with the answer options in big colorful bubbles. The second version is with the classic green answer options. See the preview to see the different styles of task card.

There is an answer sheet for students as well as an answer key where students can check their own answers.
NOTE: There are two versions of the answer sheet due to the differences between American English and British English. The last two task cards (31 & 32) have different answers depending on the region. For example: AT the weekend vs. ON the weekend and ON Thanksgiving vs. AT Thanksgiving. You choose which is more appropriate for your class.

A Powerpoint presentation about the Prepositions of Time AT, ON and IN in English.
We look at when to use these prepositions and have included many example sentences.

The following uses are explained:
– AT with a Specific Time (hours) and Holiday Periods
There is a clock that will help you explain o’clock and we also look at the meaning of midnight vs. midday/noon. The holiday periods in the examples include Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving.

– ON with Days and Dates
Includes a reminder about using capital letters. Includes a section about not using the definite article (the) before the day (as in some languages such as Spanish).

– IN with Months, Years, Decades, Centuries, Seasons and for Future time
Includes a reminder about using capital letters with months. Shows how the Brazilian National Day is IN September but ON September 7th. We show the correct use of apostrophes with decades. We highlight how centuries use ordinal numbers. Future Time refers to IN + Time period (e.g. in 2 days, in five hours)

– AT, ON and IN with parts of the day or when there is a day + part of the day
We look at IN with morning, afternoon, evening but AT with night. We then look at those parts of the day and the preposition to use when it is combined with a day of the week such as Sunday evening, Friday night.

– AT the weekend vs. ON the weekend
We briefly look at the difference between AT the weekend (British English) and ON the weekend (American English)

– AT the moment
We clarify that we don’t say “at this” moment (which some ESL students say as a direct translation from their own language)

– Last, Next, This, and Every
We do not use a preposition (at, on, in) before the words Last, Next, This or Every.

– Summary Charts
We have included two summary charts of the uses of AT, ON and IN. One with parts of the day and the other with most of the other uses mentioned above.

For a detailed look at what each slide contains, I recommend watching our video:

We made this video into a PowerPoint Presentation as some teachers do not have access to YouTube (or internet) in their classrooms. Also teachers can explain each slide at their own pace according to the level of their students. Once the lesson has finished you may refer students to the video on YouTube so they can review the topic or go to should they have any doubts later.

Telling the Time in English – Flash Cards & Charts https://www.woodwardenglish.com/resources/telling-the-time-in-english-flash-cards-charts/ Fri, 13 May 2016 15:03:44 +0000 http://www.woodwardenglish.com/?post_type=product&p=1283 Flash Cards and Charts for Telling the Time in English - ESL / ELA Teacher Resource

Telling the Time in English – Flash Cards & Charts

The flash cards contain the following times (shown on an analog clock and as words in English): 2:00, 2:05, 2:10, 2:15, 2:20, 2:25, 2:30, 2:35, 2:40, 2:45, 2:50, 2:55.

The times written in English below the clock can be in one of two forms. One form uses the PAST / TO (e.g. It’s twenty to three) and the other way uses the Time + Number form (e.g. It’s two forty). Both forms are written on their own separate cards.

There are 4 flash cards per page, each containing an analog clock with its time in words. There is a dotted line around each flash card for ease of cutting. The clocks increase in 5-minute intervals from 2:00 to 2:55.

We have included a larger version with one clock (and its time) per page.

There is also a chart showing an analog clock with the 5-minute intervals written next to the appropriate number. This structure is useful as students can give any time in English. Below this, there are some other common time expressions which will be of use. Again, there are two versions of this chart, one for PAST / TO and one for Time + Number.

You may also want to laminate each chart and flash card so that they can be reused every year. Some teachers also photocopy these and make a booklet for students.

Permission to use these charts and flash cards is only for individual classroom use (or with private students).
