Woodward English Quiz – ESOL Task Cards

The objective of these tasks cards is for English learners (ESOL) at an intermediate level to practice and improve their English.

Each task card is a multiple-choice quiz where a sentence or question has a word or some words missing from it. Students need to choose one of four options available to correctly complete the blank space and write their answer on an answer sheet.

There are 100 different quizzes which cover topics such as: do vs. make, prepositions, countable and uncountable nouns, some/any, much/many, tenses (present, past, perfect), homophones, common mistakes (your vs. you’re), adjective word order, comparatives/superlatives, articles, for vs. since, collocations, phrasal verbs, general vocabulary, and more.

A teacher answer key has been created which can also be used by students to check their own work. This makes it ideal as a literary center activity.

You can see all of the questions in this set by looking at each individual quiz on our social media accounts (there is an entire board on pinterest called English Quiz). This set contains Woodward English Quizzes numbered 1 to 100. The difference with the quizzes in THIS resource is that the answers do NOT appear in the bottom right corner and our website addresses don’t appear at the bottom (as they do on social media). Also, this resource contains blank answer sheets for students and an answer key for teachers/students.

I have made it easier for teachers to print with 6 quizzes per page (surrounded by dotted lines for cutting). Another alternative is to project one quiz a day on the board and ask students WHY a certain answer is correct. Doing so will give you 20 weeks worth of activity.

A Powerpoint presentation about the Prepositions of Time AT, ON and IN in English.
We look at when to use these prepositions and have included many example sentences.

The following uses are explained:
– AT with a Specific Time (hours) and Holiday Periods
There is a clock that will help you explain o’clock and we also look at the meaning of midnight vs. midday/noon. The holiday periods in the examples include Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving.

– ON with Days and Dates
Includes a reminder about using capital letters. Includes a section about not using the definite article (the) before the day (as in some languages such as Spanish).

– IN with Months, Years, Decades, Centuries, Seasons and for Future time
Includes a reminder about using capital letters with months. Shows how the Brazilian National Day is IN September but ON September 7th. We show the correct use of apostrophes with decades. We highlight how centuries use ordinal numbers. Future Time refers to IN + Time period (e.g. in 2 days, in five hours)

– AT, ON and IN with parts of the day or when there is a day + part of the day
We look at IN with morning, afternoon, evening but AT with night. We then look at those parts of the day and the preposition to use when it is combined with a day of the week such as Sunday evening, Friday night.

– AT the weekend vs. ON the weekend
We briefly look at the difference between AT the weekend (British English) and ON the weekend (American English)

– AT the moment
We clarify that we don’t say “at this” moment (which some ESL students say as a direct translation from their own language)

– Last, Next, This, and Every
We do not use a preposition (at, on, in) before the words Last, Next, This or Every.

– Summary Charts
We have included two summary charts of the uses of AT, ON and IN. One with parts of the day and the other with most of the other uses mentioned above.

For a detailed look at what each slide contains, I recommend watching our video:

We made this video into a PowerPoint Presentation as some teachers do not have access to YouTube (or internet) in their classrooms. Also teachers can explain each slide at their own pace according to the level of their students. Once the lesson has finished you may refer students to the video on YouTube so they can review the topic or go to should they have any doubts later.

ESL / ESOL Prepositions of Place – Charts and Flash Cards in English

The prepositions that appear on these charts are:
behind, in front of, next to = beside, between, near = close to, above = over, below = under, in, on.

There are TWO types of preposition charts.

BOX & BALL: In the first type of chart, there is a box and a green ball. The position of the ball changes in relation to the box depending on the preposition that is used. There are two version for each preposition. One where only the preposition appears below the image. The second version has a complete sentence using that preposition, for example: The ball is behind the box.

CARTOON DOGS: The second type of chart includes cartoons that involve dogs. Each dog is positioned in a way to help explain the meaning of a preposition. For example, there are two dogs behind a postman. The example sentence is: The dogs are behind the postman.

BONUS: There is an additional page with the words “Prepositions of Place” with a description below it that says “A preposition of place shows the position or location of one thing in relation to another thing. It helps answer the question “Where?”.

The main summary charts have two versions. One large chart per page OR two small charts on one page with cutting lines around them.

To see examples of these charts (see the images and sentences) that appear in this resource, see our video lesson about Prepositions of Place.

These wall charts are perfect for decorating the ESL / ESOL classroom. You may also want to laminate each cartoon chart and use them as large flashcards. Some teachers also photocopy these and make a booklet for students.
